TALK: Museum Collections and the Most Important Question in Zoology

Given present proposals to diminish the role of research scientists and collection managers in the South Australian Museum this will be an excellent opportunity to hear from one of South Australia’s most eminent South Australian Museum researchers on the implications of this proposal with submissions presently before a Statutory Authority Review Committee (SARC).

Presented by South Australian Museum Honorary Associate and former curator of Reptiles and Amphibians Dr. Mark Hutchinson.

‘I grew up in Melbourne, BSc and PhD in Zoology from La Trobe University, and followed this with post-doctoral research in the US during mid-80s at the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia, and the University of Illinois. Joined the scientific staff of the SA Museum in 1990 as Herpetology Curator, and later also became an affiliated staff member of both University of Adelaide and Flinders University. Retired in 2019, and have continued at the museum as an Honorary Researcher.

My scientific research interests mostly centre on the diversity, evolution and osteology of reptiles, as well as the conservation and distribution of the herpetofauna of South Australia.

After some 35 years or so associated with the SA Museum, I have rather strong feelings about the essential role that the world’s natural history museums play in enabling the entire field of animal biology in its many branches. That role is the subject of my talk, “Museum Collections and the Most Important Question in Zoology”.’

The meeting is scheduled to start at 6:30 pm. We would like to start on time.  Please arrive ten minutes earlier to find a place.

Please bring a plate to share and also your own cup.

Entry by donation (minimum of $2). Bookings not required.

In the case of an advertised speaker not being available, we will seek a replacement speaker of similar interest.
