Presented by Rosalie and Robert Lawrence. Rosalie and Robert share an interest in native orchids and iNaturalist.
In this talk, Robert and Rosalie will talk about the marginal habitat requirements of orchids and their range of survival strategies.
Robert was recently re-appointed as President of the Native Orchid Society of South Australia and Rosalie has been the webmaster for over a decade.
They run a business called Heritage Bushcare. This involves weed control and site maintenance for local councils, Forestry SA reserves and private landholders, including those with Heritage Agreement grants.
Robert has a passion for preparing sites so that they are ready for the reintroduction of native orchids that are likely to have been present before colonisation.
In 2011 Robert wrote a book called ‘Start with the Leaves’, a simple guide to the orchids and lilies of the Adelaide Hills, and this led him toward public education and active involvement in citizen science.
In 2017 they won a Citizen Science grant to launch ‘Wild Orchid Watch’ as a national project to record orchid observations and their habitat. This was developed on the iNaturalist platform, which has become the main way for recording orchid observations, at least in South Australia.
In 2020 Robert and Rosalie were jointly recognised as the Unsung Hero of Science Communication for South Australia.
