Returning Platypus to the Torrens: Turning a Dream into Reality

5 November @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Presented by Professor Chris Daniels

Platypus were last recorded in the River Torrens /Karrawirra Parri in the 1880s Their extinction correlated with the destruction of the Torrens. However, since the 1970s and particularly over the past 2 decades, the Torrens has been rejuvenated. Could we now bring back the platypus? If so how? This talk discusses the fall and rise of the River Torrens and the program to rewild Platypus.
Professor Chris Daniels, Chair of the Green Adelaide Landscape Board, and member of 30 other Environmental Boards and committees, is no stranger to Butterfly Conservation SA. In 2012 he launched our website, and when Director of the Cleland Wildlife Park, formed a relationship with our organisation during the project to house and raise butterflies at Cleland. He continues to be an an enthusiasic supporter of BCSA.

Christopher has been an incredible force in popularising citizen science in Australia. The former university academic and now government scientist has presented on ABC Radio for two decades.
He started with fortnightly backyard wildlife segments in 2003 and, since 2007, has presented community programs on urban environmental science.
Christopher was a driving force in Adelaide becoming a National Park City and spearheads efforts to connect South Australians with nature.
He also uses the arts to promote conservation. Christopher has written 11 books including a children’s book, Koala, produced a musical theatre show on koalas, delivered comedy for the Adelaide Fringe with South Australia’s Science Media Centre, and advocates for numerous South Australian nature authors.
